The National Zoo in Washington D.C.

Located less than a mile from The Normandy Hotel and nestled on 163 acres in Rock Creek National Park, the National Zoo is a destination for animal lovers of all ages. Come face to face with over 2,000 animals representing 400 species, including wild cats, sea lions, fascinating reptiles and birds, and the ever-popular giant pandas from China. The National Zoo is part of the Smithsonian Institution.



April-October: Daily 10a.m.-6p.m.; November-March: Daily 10a.m. to 4:30p.m.


Admission is free.

The Giant Panda Exhibit

Catch Mei Xiang (adult female) and Tian Tian (adult male) in action at the Giant Panda Exhibit. The two giant pandas are part of an intensive research and breeding program designed to preserve these endangered creatures. There are only an estimated 1,600 giant pandas in existence with the majority residing in the mountainous regions in central China.

  • What Are Some Of The Zoo’S More Popular Exhibits?

    Must-see exhibits include Great Cats, features roaring Sumatran tigers, lions, and other cats. The American Trail is always popular, complete with playful California sea lions, beavers, and river otters. Be sure to take the kids to the tide pool where their toes can mingle with artificial barnacles, sea urchins, and sea stars.
  • When Is The Best Time To Visit The Zoo?

    To really see zebras, gazelles, lions, and birds in action, arrive by morning. If you’re headed to indoor exhibits like the Reptile Discovery Center and Amazonia, the animals are sure to be out most of the day.
